What are the advantages of pet ownership?

Generally speaking, what are the advantages of pet ownership? It would be nice to speak specifically on dogs ( because i have one!)

1. mostly so you can have a companion in the pet and something to take care of, but dogs can also be for defense.
2. A lot! Learning responsibility. Loyalty. Love. Laughter. Happiness. Dog kisses. Doesn't make you feel lonely. Most of the advantages are things I can't really express into a few words. It's just...an "experience" itself than can truly justify the advantages of owning a pet.
3. I have a dog, and it's really nice to come home and see a friendly face, especially if you've had a bad day. They love you unconditionally, and it's a great way of meeting people. I end up speaking to people that I probably wouldn't have even seen if I hadn't been out and about, walking my dog. I couldn't be without a dog now!!
4. Pets (especially dogs and cats) are supposed to help reduce stress. Personally I think that's bull because my dogs cause me no end of stress. Or maybe it's the fact that I'm the only one who takes care of the dogs, or maybe it's because I have 3. I don't know. Anyway they are supposed to help reduce stress and give companionship. Sorry about the rant.
5. Companionship. I use my dog to relieve stress by talking with him about my problems. Some times i think i annoy him because he just looks at me and tilts his head side to side.
6. My dog cuddles up to me when I'm sad and makes funny noises and he is always ready to play. He loves making me happy by doing a trick or licking me and comes up to me when he is bored or scared! He is a Jack Russell and i Love him!!
7. I have also heard that ppl with animals tend to live longer, might be related to the lower stress thing... unless you have 3...and only you look after them...lol i know what thats like...
